Although a great deal of effort often goes into the hardware specification for variable frequency drives (VFD) little attention or understanding is applied to how to control the system. The belief is that the hardware of the VFD itself causes the energy savings. The core out of the misunderstanding appears to be the term ‘Centrifugal Affinity Laws / handle Laws’. In this article John Everhart of ITT Industries — Fluid Handling Division takes a look at these ‘Laws’ the assumptions behind them and the savings that can be realistically expected in most systems. Variable speed drives furnish many advantages in the operation of centrifugal pumps but in spite of this many barriers remain to implementing the technology to its beat potential. In this article from the USA. Mike Pemberton of ITT Goulds Pumps seeks to dispel the myths and legends surrounding variable frequency technology and its application arguing that it has now developed to the inform that these barriers are for the most move perceived rather than actual. Where variable speed pumping systems are under consideration for a specific application such as for a wastewater lift station designers and end users need to understand and take into be various factors and create by mental act criteria in order to make an informed decision. In this article from the USA. Charles G. Stolberg. Executive Director of the Submersible Wastewater handle Association describes some of the contributing components of the variable speed pumping system and how they interact with certain other components and provides information to properly evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of applying such a design to submersible pumping equipment. The Affinity Laws are a group of rules that govern your pumps. Sometimes they're called the Laws of Similarity. In years gone by these laws served to predict a pump's operation when exported to a country with different electricity. The electricity in the United States is 60 hertz (Hz). This means that the electricity moves in waves with a frequency of 60 cycles per second. Some other countries in the world have electricity moving at a frequency of 50 Hz. or 50 cycles per second. A change in frequency brings about a change in running go (rpm). Upon exporting a pump into a country and connecting it to an electric motor running at different speeds the handle has different operational characteristics. Those characteristics change by the Affinity Laws. Now with the arrival of the variable speed electric go called Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) the Affinity Laws will become increasingly important with industrial pumps. With the advancement of electronics the role of a display as an interface between man and machine becomes increasingly important. Color liquid crystal displays (LCDs) used for personal computers as alternatives to color cathode ray furnish (CRT) displays have helped enhance market awareness of flat-panel displays. Among the flat-panel displays of various types used in many ways emissive displays hold a key position. This paper explains the vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) and the field emission display (FED) in terms of their current technical aspects and their future. Any HVAC system that spends a large amount of its total operating hours at less than peak load is a potential candidate for VFD furnish. Hospitals are typically a 24 / 7 operation making most of their fan and pump applications potential variable speed candidates. Here we discuss the energy savings possibilities when using VFDs on these applications. We also furnish a brief introduction to harmonic distortion with an explanation of some reasons and methods for limiting harmonics.

"EDITORIAL: No smoking near hospitals" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-02-29 20:12:41

Lexington-area hospitals have joined in an alliance to ban all smoking on their property. . The smoking ban at hospitals in central Kentucky ordain cause the same sort of problems. In the months leading up to the total ban the hospitals would be wise to develop a plan for handling those related problems. That’s part of their responsibility for instituting a policy that causes problems for others.

"Survey Picks 41 Top Hospitals in US" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-04 01:44:49

Sept. 18. 2007 -- Thirty-three hospitals and eight children's hospitals werenamed top facilities by a health compassionate business assort Tuesday. The facilities mostly in large cities got top scores for boosting patientsafety standards and for treating high-risk diseases according to scientificevidence. Hospitals also got points if they used electronic prescribingprograms. Hospitals in Oakland. Calif.. Pittsburgh. Boston and Seattle were amongthose singled out by the Leapfrog assort a assort started by corporations andother large employers worried about health care costs. Children's hospitals inAtlanta. Los Angeles and Detroit were also among top scorers. To score well hospitals were evaluated in four categories: having intensivecare units staffed by specially trained doctors having computerizedorder-entry systems for medications and other orders with error-preventionmeasures performing procedures such as cardiac catheterization and caring forcertain high-risk neonatal conditions and performing safe practices such asthose designed to control hospital-related infections and cut drink onmedication and treatment errors. "It's critical that patients decide hospitals with adequate experienceand a proven bring in record," says Suzanne Delbanco. CEO of the Leapfroggroup. A growing number of groups including the federal government are usingreport cards to communicate consumers about hospital safety. Like this one thereport cards generally decide how often hospitals meet quality and safetystandards but don't decide how many patients actually get better or survivetheir illnesses. Delbanco says that despite progress only 10% of hospitals surveyed usecomputerized systems to act track of doctors' orders.   Hospitals are also behind on infection hold back she says. Only one-quarterof hospitals surveyed fully met the inform's standards for optimal infectioncontrol. And only 36% of hospitals have "adequate" transfer washingprocedures in displace for all employees. Delbanco says. "Historically hospitals and docs have believed that hospital-acquiredinfections are just move of health compassionate," she told reporters Tuesday.

"Hospitals given out on contraception bill" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-13 21:33:41

Madison -- An Assembly committee approved a bill today requiring hospitals to provide emergency contraception to assail victims who be it but granted hospitals the ability to opt out of the assign on religious grounds. Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison) said the Republican changes gutted the bill he helped write. But he said bill supporters had enough Republican votes to go the original bill. "Unfortunately members of the Assembly committee decided to align with the far far right and rewrote the bill to gut the account," Pocan said. The Judiciary and Ethics Committee voted 6-4 along party lines to revise the bill and send it to the full Assembly. The original bill -- passed by the Senate with bipartisan support -- would require all hospitals to provide rape victims with information about emergency contraception and give them the contraception if they wanted it. The committee's changes would accept hospitals to opt out of the requirement if they were opposed to it on moral or religious grounds. Rep. attach Gundrum (R-New Berlin) the committee's chairman said he and his colleagues amended the bill to protect populate's First Amendment rights to freedom of religion. "To say it guts the account that's not accurate," Gundrum said saying the bill would greatly grow the be of hospitals that give emergency contraception. Pocan said he was disappointed with the committee's action but that at least five Republicans would support the original bill if it gets to the Assembly floor giving Democrats the votes they need to go the account. Republicans hold back the Assembly 52-47. Your browser must give javascript to use the posts pager. gratify enable javascript or return to the to page through posts. . Journal Sentinel Inc. "South Florida Hospitals: Not Sicko" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 18:33:58

Despite Michael Moore’s condemnation of our healthcare. I have to overlap some personal experiences I’ve had with our hospitals in South Florida. On 2 different occasions once when I had to carry my young daughter to the emergency room at Joe Dimaggio the children’s wing of the Memoral Regional Hospital and another measure when my husband was rushed to the emergency dwell at Aventura Hospital . Both times. I was truly amazed by the attention and speed of care. We were immediately admitted tests were administered before anyone even asked how we would be paying. And that is how emergency rooms in American hospitals work: you cannot be denied medical attention. This is in sharp differentiate to the Canadian system where through personal undergo. I undergo seen patients waiting for hours before any triage was done and being required to show some proof for payment. Now that is sicko. This article was written by: Very glad you had good experiences. Unfortunately after working as an RN for 43 years I can tell you that it doesn’t always work that way. We’ve had incredibly positive experiences at Miami Children’s Hospital and believe it or not also at the Baptist Urgent compassionate Facility on S. W. 144 Street just east of US 1. (The urgent care facilities act patients after 6:00 p m until approximately midnight.) I brought my daughter to the Dimaggio clinic after 7:00 pm and was thrilled with the care we received. I’ve heard good things about the Children’s Hospital from others as well. It’s nice to undergo good things to say about our healthcare system although it may be far from ameliorate. Too often we focus only on the negative… and I’m not just referrring to hospitals. "Hospitals See Infection Rates More Than Halved, Patient Stays ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-09 03:00:53

An innovative medical device is responsible for reducing surgical site infection rates by more than 50 percent and for significantly shortening hospital stays when compared with traditional narcotic pain care according to a chew over presented today at the 47th Annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents & Chemotherapy (ICAAC). These results indicate that ON-Q(R) PainBuster with ON-Q SilverSoaker(TM) Antimicrobial Catheter from I-Flow Corporation may have the potential to deliver hospitals billions of dollars if used for post-surgical pain relief across multiple surgeries. ON-Q is the only hurt relief handle to include an antimicrobial catheter and the first and only to document an infection reduction capability. The multi-center infection surveillance study comparing two types of post-surgical pain relief -- the use of ON-Q PainBuster with ON-Q SilverSoaker and local anesthetic versus systemic narcotics -- following colorectal surgeries was conducted at 14 U. S surgical sites. It measured the surgical site infection rates 30 days after surgery and length of be for 289 patients including any hospital re-admissions or other necessary infection treatment after they were released from the hospital. Colorectal surgery was chosen for the study as it is the most infection-prone surgery in most hospitals. Patients were randomized to receive either continuous infusion of local anesthetic using ON-Q or traditional narcotic pain management. Results showed that the ON-Q patients were 55 percent less likely to create a surgical place infection when compared to the hold back assort (6.6 percent versus 14.6 percent; p-value of 0.033). The patient's average length of stay dropped to 6.1 days for ON-Q patients from 8.4 days for the hold back assort a 27 percent reduction (p-value of 0.0003). The co-lead investigators of the study were Dr. Jay Singh of Piedmont Colorectal Associates. Director of Surgical Residency. Piedmont and Associate Professor of Surgery. Emory University in Atlanta and Dr. Alan Thorson. Clinical cerebrate Professor of Surgery and schedule Director of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Creighton University."I undergo used ON-Q for post-surgical hurt relief for hundreds of my patients and undergo seen them undergo significantly less pain a quicker recovery and fewer infections when recuperating from surgery," said Dr. Singh. "I intend to act to use ON-Q as my standard of compassionate post-surgically to provide superior pain relief and to lower the risk of infection for my patients."The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced that for discharges occurring on or after October 1. 2008 hospitals will not receive additional payment for patients in which certain conditions were not show on admission such as hospital-acquired infections. CMS reserved the right to add to the enumerate of hospital-acquired infections which may prove in higher costs to hospitals if infection rates are not reduced. Based on this study. ON-Q shows potential to help hospitals hold back costs related to surgical place infections. Using data from the ON-Q Colorectal Infection chew over and a systematic audit published in the American Journal of Infection Control it appears that ON-Q may save thousands of dollars for an average surgical recovery by decreasing the assay of infection length of hospital be and post-discharge complications. If the data is projected across all p ost-surgical situations where the system would be allot potential savings to the healthcare system could be billions of dollars. The unique infection prevention capability of the system is enhanced by the ON-Q SilverSoaker catheter that is treated with an antimicrobial plate agent in nanotechnology create and has been shown in in-vitro testing to be 99.9 percent effective in decreasing bacteria and fungus commonly associated with hospital-acquired infections. plate has desire been known as an antimicrobial agent and is now used in many modern medical devices. In addition when patients are treated with ON-Q they often do not experience the immune-suppressive response of narcotics which can essentially weaken patients and alter it more difficult for their bodies to fight an infection."ON-Q PainBuster with ON-Q SilverSoaker Antimicrobial Catheter is considered the merchandise leader in hurt relief pumps due to its superior hurt relief go of use faster recovery times for patients and antimicrobial benefits," stated Donald M. Earhart. President and CEO of I-Flow Corporation. "We are extremely encouraged about the role ON-Q may now be able to play in infection prevention and surgical place compassionate potentially lowering healthcare be across hospitals and health systems."About ON-QON-Q PainBuster from I-Flow Corporation is the market leader in continuous surgical-site pain relief systems -- commonly known as "hurt pumps" or "hurt relief pumps." It consists of a small balloon pump that holds local anesthetic (a pain-numbing medicine) and delivers it automatically through its proprietary ON-Q SilverSoaker catheter treated with an antimicrobial silver agent to provide even distribution of local anesthesia over a wider area than competitive devices. ON-Q is the only hurt relief handle to consider an antimicrobial catheter and the first and only to enter an infection reduction capability. ON-Q is labeled to significantly reduce hurt exceed than narcotics and to significantly reduce narcotics intake after surgery. ON-Q was upheld as a best practice for post-surgical pain relief and its widespread use was encouraged as part of a in an independent study published in the prestigious Journal of American College of Surgeons. Currently more than 55 studies on the use of ON-Q undergo been completed and published or presented and more investigate is being conducted to investigate the benefits of ON-Q in such areas as infection prevention combination therapies (e g. local anesthetic and antibiotic mixtures a combination of a local anesthetic and an anti-inflammatory) pediatrics and chronic pain.
